After taking his season's tally to 4 Peter Thorne has identified the crucial difference this season as the fact that he has come through a pre-season without injury for the first time in years.
Speaking to the Telegraph & Argus he said 'it`s nice to feel fit and sharp at the start of the season for once.'
Last year Peter Thorne was one of Stuart McCall's first signings and Julian Rhodes called it a signing that would send shockwaves through the division. Unfortunately for the Bantams Thorne picked up a hip injury during pre-season that kept the former Stoke, Norwich and Cardiff man out of the side.
Reflecting on those last campaigns Thorne said 'I picked up an injury at the wrong time last year and it`s been a bit of a story of mine over the last few years, picking up little niggles at the worst time.
But I didn`t miss a day`s pre-season and I`m feeling good for it.
Obviously it`s going well. For me to get two in the first game was brilliant and then to get another two is fantastic. So hopefully I can keep that going.'
When his first goal came Peter Thorne was quick to make up for lost time as although he didn't break his duck until November 10th, he went on to score 15 from 33 appearances with his highlight obviously being the hat trick against Notts County.
Last year the 8 game winless streak that came to define a mediocre season happened before Thorne found his scoring touch. Thorne got his first in the second game against Chester, our first FA Cup victory in ages and our upturn in form was no coincidence.
Talking about how good it is to hit the ground running Thorne said 'you miss games, you lose your match fitness and then you`ve got to go into first-team games trying to get your fitness back so it doesn`t do you any favours, that`s why it took me a while to get going last year.'
Reflecting on Saturday he had special praise for Joe Colbeck, who marked his return from suspension with involvement in both goals 'Joe put a good ball in - he told me he was going to set me up so that`s why we were going mental when we were celebrating. He came over telling me he was right of course'
Ironically, after talking up his fitness Thorne will spend most of this week out of action after picking up a dead leg on Saturday. However, he wanted to stay in the thick of the action so tried to run it off 'I got it so early on and tried to run it off and it just wouldn`t go. I wanted to stay on and try and get a hat-trick. It`s giving me a bit of jip now but I should hopefully be okay for training on Thursday.'
And Thorne was full of praise for the two team mates battling out to partner him up front saying 'he`s (Michael Boulding) a class player but that`s not taking anything away from Baz (Conlon) because I think he`s been different class all pre-season and in the first game. But the gaffer gave Micky his chance and he was unlucky not to score - he hit the post and it ran right across the goal.
But someone who scored as many goals as he did last year in a team that went down - you know he`s a goalscorer.'
All eyes on Saturday's much sterner test against last season's 5th place side and twice Bantam-conquering Rochdale. It's promising to be a great game
