A look at our Wembley opponents Part 4 - Morison

A look at our Wembley opponents Part 4 - Morison

The former Wales international and Norwich forward will provide a right handful come Saturday afternoon. With one of the most free scoring attackers in the league Millwall can field Morison along with Lee Gregory and Aiden O'Brien, this trio will be quite formidable as they have scored 51 goals between them this season in all competitions. This season's joint top scorer for Millwall, Morison once commanded a transfer fee of £2.8m making a move to East Anglia to the Canaries for a couple of seasons after his first spell with Millwall.

Approaching his mid 30s, Steve Morison is entering his twilight years of his career and Saturday may prove to be his last visit to Wembley, the former Wales and England C international and ex Premiership player has played in some big games over the years and some of the best stadia in the land including a Wembley match against England so the occasion shouldn't be too daunting for the London born Welshman.

Is he an "R" short of a shop?
Quite frankly, no! 18 goals this season, 19 last, Morison knows where the net is, he has played international football for Wales making almost 2 dozen appearances and also plied his trade in the Premiership with Norwich then moving to Leeds United, a large venue with a large crown will not faze him. Already a 3 times trophy winner at Wembley, he lifted the FA Trophy in 2007 and 2009 with Stevenage Borough and more recently the League One play off final trophy in 2010, so not only has Morison got the T-shirt and worn it, he's worn it out altogether. This current season Morison is Millwall's player of the year and back in the 2007/08 season achieved the equivalent accolade with Stevenage.

Steve Morison where and how many.
Probably the Southern equivalent of Jon Stead, Morison will get goals aplenty, but fans of some clubs will wonder if he ever scored at all in this lifetime and the last.
Millwall - 243 games - 85 goals
Leeds United - 42 games - 5 goals
Norwich - 59 games - 12 goals
Stevenage Borough - 142 games - 76 goals
Bishop's Stortford - 45 games - 28 goals
Northampton - 28 games - 3 goals
Wales - 20 games - 1 goal
England C - 8 games 3 goals

Seasonal stats
2016/17 - 49 games - 18 goals
2015/16 - 57 games - 19 goals
2014/15 - 26 games - 2 goals
2013/14 - 42 games - 8 goals
2012/13 - 43 games - 5 goals
2011/12 - 45 games - 11 goals
2010/11 - 50 games - 17 goals
2009/10 - 52 games - 23 goals
2008/09 - 49 games - 27 goals
2007/08 - 44 games - 22 goals
2006/07 - 49 games - 27 goals

Over the last decade Morison has played 506 games scoring 179 goals so on average scoring every 2 to 3 games. Even with a couple of quiet seasons scoring wise, Morison still averages 16 a season for the past decade and he has also got himself onto the scoreboard at Wembley in the FA Trophy final for Stevenage. Steve is very experienced and knows his professional career is coming to an end and will provide a massive level head for the Lions.

This season.
Scoring 18 goals in 49 games with 56 shots on target and 11 yellows to his name this season, Morison is a very attacking player that will be looking to add another Wembley goal onto his vast career stats. It was a Morison brace that overcame Scunthorpe and booked the play off final scoring 2 against the Iron helping to a 2-3 victory, going into that game Steve has only scored 1 goal in the previous 17 games and in his last 15 games has picked up 6 yellows. Is promotion playing on his mind?

Will Morison score on Saturday?
Steve Morison has only played 6 times against Bradford City and in all those games only managed to find the net once, in the first leg play off last season. I wouldn't put money on Morison scoring at any time, but I wouldn't put money on for him not to score either. His form has been a bit barren of late, picking up more yellow cards than scoring goals these past couple of months, but if you read into that, that highlights his early season form was more remarkable. Our defenders will have their hands full with the trio of Morison, O'Brien and Gregory and it will take a mammoth effort to shut all 3 out over 90 minutes with extra time or not. If Morison doesn't score, I think it will be very highly likely he will have an assist to his name come Saturday afternoon. A player which can be a handful for most teams, we seem to be able to cope with him looking at recent games in the past 2 years.
