Greer Attitude Impresses McCall

Greer Attitude Impresses McCall

Gordon Greer, familiar with Stuart McCall from the Bradford boss' involvement with Scotland, has joined up with City in Austria as the former Brighton and Blackburn defender looks to win a Bantams deal.

There's no assurances of a deal and McCall isn't promising anything but the fact Greer, 36, was prepared to head out to Kleinwalsertal, Austria, and join up with Bradford for would have worked in his favour.

McCall did have a few 'under consideration' but some didn't fancy the idea of joining the squad without knowing if they had something at the end of it.

However, the boss has told the Telegraph & Argus how Greer was up for it instantly.

He said: 'There were a few people who were under consideration but Gordon was the one that said 'yeah, I'd like to come away with you'. There were a couple in the frame who didn't want to come but he was buzzing about it. That made it a no-brainer for us. It's not a trial as such and there are no guarantees either way. We'll have to see if we like him and he likes us.'

Greer was involved in the Scotland squad as recently as a year ago so McCall knows him well and feels players are willing to go away with clubs will usually be rewarded - if nothing else they get a break and work on their fitness!

McCall said: 'It's only just over a year ago he played for Scotland against France pre-Euros. I know that because I was with that squad. I like the fact that he's backing himself after agreeing to come with us. You look at Mike Williamson, who is away with Oxford, and Michael Turner from Hull, who went away with Southend. I remember taking Rammers (Simon Ramsden) from Bradford when we were away with Motherwell. We ended up signing him on the strength of that.'

Familiar with some of the current squad from his Brighton days, Greer has a chance but equally McCall went on to say he's aware the veteran could 'have a better offer' from another club when he returns.

'Gordon knows Romain Vincelot and Adam Chicksen from Brighton and he's a really good professional. It's a good chance to have a look - but as I say, nothing is guaranteed. We might like him but he might have a better offer when he gets back. He's come over here with us to take part and we'll see how we go.'
