McCall - All About The Three Points

McCall - All About The Three Points

Stuart McCall openly admitted Bradford looked a little nervy on Saturday and will have to improve but the three points following a 2-1 win over newly promoted Blackpool was the main thing.

Bradford took the lead shortly before half time after Nicky Law's freekick was flicked on to Nathaniel Knight-Percival who scored his first goal for City since his arrival from Shrewsbury last year.

The lead didn't last for long though as Blackpool were level just a couple of minutes later when Mark Cullen put Colin Daniel through to draw the Tangerines level at half time.

However, Omari Patrick, secured from Yorkshire rivals Barnsley following his release at the end of last season, marked his Bradford debut with the winner when set up by another City arrival in the summer, Jake Reeves, to give the Bantams a winning start.

A cash of heads between Adam Chicksen, of course another debutant, with Blackpool defender Oliver Turton was a serious concern though. The full back was knocked unconscious and needed 12 minutes of treatment before he came round and was taken to hospital.

McCall told the Official Website he 'didn't enjoy' the first 45 minutes but thought the second half showed the improvement needed, which he knows leaves room for plenty more to come and the boss is confident this will be the case.

'I have to say that I didn't enjoy the first half from us. There was a little bit of edginess from us and our passing from back to front wasn't good enough. They also played three at the back with wing backs that didn't get forward much, but we will have to deal with that because teams are going to come here and set-up in similar ways this season.'

Adding: 'We needed to get better in the second half, and we did. Your first home game of the season is all about getting the three points. Our second half display probably meant we merited the win. We have some young players who maybe need a bit of coaching and advice to get them in the right areas, but there is definitely more to come from the lads.'

He went on to say the debutants looked as if they'll make an impact but backed them to 'keep improving' as will Bradford, getting 'stronger too' when those not available of Saturday can return.

Victory, which McCall said was helped by the crowd lifting the players, proving key, was the main thing.

'We know we have to improve overall but the pleasing thing was that we got better as the game went on. I must thank the fans for that as well. It would have been easy for them to get on the players' backs after the first half,' added McCall.

He finished: 'We had a couple of chances at the start of the second period though, and the crowd really responded and lifted the lads. Once we get to 2-1, I think we looked as comfortable as you can do with such a narrow margin, but the backing of the players from the fans to begin with was key.'
