Positives Taken From Doncaster Defeat

Positives Taken From Doncaster Defeat

Bradford, playing the final half an hour with 10 men, twice battled back to level against Doncaster but City's League One rivals advanced in the League Cup scoring a winner three minutes from time.

An early Alfie May goal, as the Doncaster man followed up to score from close range, put the visitors ahead but Dominic Poleon's first Bradford goal, linking up well with Omari Patrick, had Bradford level before half time.

Romain Vincelot's sending off on the hour for a late tackle on May saw Doncaster take advantage a little over 10 minutes later when Rodney Kongolo, initially denied by Bradford goalkeeper Colin Doyle, scored at the second attempt.

Alex Jones' 83rd minute goal looked as if it had rescued Bradford at Valley Parade but Ben Wiseman made sure Doncaster edged this Yorkshire derby when he secured Rovers a 3-2 win on 87 minutes.

Stuart McCall didn't think 'there was any doubt that the sending off played a big part in the game' as the boss felt Bradford were right in the game and 'doing well' at that point after a difficult start.

He told the Official Website: 'Doncaster were another team who came with three centre halves and looked to hit on the counter-attack. They did it well at times, and I thought we struggled for the first twenty minutes or so. After that initial period though, we stayed to play more through them.'

McCall was pleased to see Poleon and Patrick linking up well and feels both are now settling a benchmark to live up to with City 'a little unfortunate' to lose it late on.

'It was a great goal from Dom (Poleon) after linking up with Omari (Patrick). Dom is a strong, physical presence. As I said to Omari after Saturday, that is the standard he has set now,' said McCall.

Adding: 'We were well in the game at the start of the second period when we go down to ten men. It was a spirited display after that to get the equaliser, we were just a little unfortunate then to concede with two minutes to go.'

Yes, McCall was obviously disappointed by an early League Cup exit but he's taken the positives from defeat and wants this to continue at Gillingham on Saturday.

'We're disappointed, as always, to lose but there were some strong performances and some positives to take from the game, including (Alex) Jonesy getting his first goal of the season. It was good to get Tom (Field) up and running as well. He will get stronger after playing this one. We look forward to Gillingham on Saturday now and putting a strong performance in there.'
