There might have been an international break with many players and squads having a bit of a rest bite. Saturday may have felt a little bit barren to the purists out there, but there were many golden nuggets throughout the leagues across the UK.

Wes Thomas opened the scoring for Oxford United on 12 minutes helping his side win 3-0 at home to AFC Wimbledon. Thomas has scored 5 and Simon Eastwood got his 4th clean sheet of the season. Oxford United jump up to 10th in League 1.

Zavon Hines scored his 6th goal of the season as he opened the scoring on 12 minutes for Maidstone United at home. This wasn't enough to prevent a last minute penalty to share the spoils with Guiseley 1-1. Hines was subbed on 88 and leaves the Stones in 8th in the National League.

Danny Forrest has now managed Silsden AFC to 11 league wins out of 11, the latest a 2-1 home win against Cammell Laird. Silsden AFC find themselves sat at the top of the North West Counties League Division 1. Can Forrest be the non league equivalent of Arsene Wenger and go an entire season unbeaten in the league?

Jordy Hiwula-Mayifuila netted his 5th goal of 2017/18 opening the scoring as Fleetwood Town won 1-2 away at Plymouth Argyle. Devante Cole failed to add to his 7 this season but the result lifts The Fleet to 9th in League 1.

Luke James almost helped to pull off one of the biggest shocks of the weekend as bottom of League 2 Forest Green Rovers travelled away to the top of the table Notts County. James may not have found himself on the score board this weekend, but it took a last minute equaliser for County to save face with the final result 1-1. The draw has lifted Rovers up 2 places to 22nd, 1 place above relegation and drops County to 2nd. Jon Stead was subbed for the home team just after the hour mark.

Steven Schumacher took charge of his first game as Southport manager in the National League North. Although they earned an equaliser on 88 minutes at home, Spennymoor Town found a late winner consigning the Sandgrounders to their 5th straight defeat dropping them to 16th.

Lee Holmes helped Exeter City to a 0-1 away victory at Carlisle United to move back to the top of League 2. Gary Liddle played the full 90 minutes for the home side whilst Jason Kennedy came on after 76 minutes. Carlisle are struggling a little this season dropping to 16th.

Paul Anderson and Will Atkinson both received a yellow card as Mansfield Town lost 2-0 away to Colchester United. The result drops Mansfield to 9th in League 2.

Lee Evans saw red on 56 minutes, his first since he was in City colours back in January 2016 away to Port Vale, a game we drew 1-1. The sending off didn't stop Wigan Athletic picking up their 9th win of the season keeping them in 2nd place in League 1 and 2 points above us. The Latics won 1-2 away to Scunthorpe United where the Iron had another ex city player receiving a card, a yellow in the case for Josh Morris. Scunny drop down to 8th in League 1 and 7 points behind Bradford City. Rory McArdle started his 14th game of the season for the Iron.

Niall Heaton got onto the score sheet in a 9 goal thriller at Croft Park as Nuneaton Town lost 6-3 away to Blyth Spartans. The result leaves Nuneaton in 18th in the National League North.

Mark Bower I would put money on falling short of taking Bradford Park Avenue to the play offs in the National League North come May. Thankfully he isn't listening to me as the latest result, a 1-1 home draw against Kidderminster Harriers keeps Avenue within 2 points of the play offs after 13 games sitting confidently in 9th. Bower really has taken Avenue up a couple of notches since taking over a team that was facing certain relegation last season. Could it actually be a reality seeing Bower taking Avenue to the conference next summer?

By eck, it was a bit nippy on Saturday, but did the cold front put a freeze on some ex Bantams, or were any ex City players on fire?

On the 9th day of Christmas, McCall gave to me....
