Around the grounds 02/12/2017
I love FA Cup weekends, as anyone and everyone, we love to see upsets, giant cup killers, and of course, our own clubs to stay in the mix and the rest of the weekend dreaming of who will get, be it a quids in draw against a big club, or a none league club at home which can be seen as a freebie to get into the next round.
Simon Ainge scored a last minute goal as Harrogate Town lost 3-2 away to FC United of Manchester in the National League North. Town lay in 3rd, 10 points with a game in hand over top spot.
Jon Stead slotted in from the spot with his 5th of the season to restore the lead for Notts County at home to Oxford City in the FA Cup only for United to create an equaliser quarter of an hour later, the final result 3-2. Stead has scored in both opening rounds of the FA Cup this season.
James Meredith helped upset the gamblers this weekend as he helped Millwall win 3-1 at home to high flying Sheffield United in the Championship. Millwall's position is a little bit more comfortable now, 6 points above the relegation zone in 17th, whilst Chris Wilder's Blades are losing a little bit of ground at the top dropping to 4th, now 6 points off automatic promotion and 7 points off top spot.
Zavon Hines almost helped cause the upset of the weekend as Maidstone went into half time 0-1 away at MK Dons in the FA Cup. Hines didn't add to his 7 goals of the season, and after a tough 2nd half, the final result ended 3-1 ending his chances of yet another cup run as he experienced with Bradford City in 2013 which earned him a Wembley appearance and a League Cup finalist medal.
Brad Jones earned Feyenoord their 2nd consecutive clean sheet as they won 1-0 at home to Stitchting Betaald Voetbal Vitesse to give the club their full name. Feyenoord are 5th and 6 points off 2nd place in the Dutch Eredivisie.
Phil Parkinson masterminded a 3-1 home win over Barnsley as Bolton Wanderers climbed out of the relegation zone from what was looking like a season of guaranteed relegation. Aaron Wilbraham came on just before full time to round off a great weekend. Bolton having played a game more than Birmingham who play Monday night at home to Wolves are in 21st in the Championship due to having scored more goals than the Brummies.
Devante Cole equalised matters as Fleetwood Town drew 1-1 at home with Hereford in the FA Cup. The goal puts Cole into double figures for the season. Jordy Hiwula-Mayifuila came on as a 2nd half sub for the Lancastrian club.
Mark Bower who was just awarded the manager of the month honour has replied with a 1-3 victory over Alfreton Town at North Street. Avenue are sitting in 6th in the National League North, play off places are 2nd to 7th in the table. Could we see Bower as a future manager of City?
Lee Evans had a tough Friday evening as Wigan Athletic could only muster a 1-1 draw away to AFC Fylde in the FA Cup earning the League 1 club a home replay against their National League opponents.
Motherwell has played Celtic 3 times in 8 days, losing in the cup final and twice in the Scottish Premiership, the latest a 5-1 loss at Celtic Park. Carl McHugh came on at the stroke of half time and got booked, his 8th yellow of the season, 1 of which ended up as a red back in August. Louis Moult was subbed just before the hour mark for the away team and the devastating loss now sees Motherwell in 5th in the table.
