Bradford look at Johnson

Simon Johnson, a 24 year old forward recently released by Dave Penney at Darlington is currently training with Stuart McCall's squad and looks set to play against Harrogate Town when Bradford City begin their pre-season campaign.

Yet to find a club since leaving Darlington in May, Johnson, who can play 'wide left, wide right or just in the hole' has had a bit of stop-start career. He spent three years as a youngster with Leeds United and made his debut in March 2003 as Leeds beat Charlton 6-1 in the Premiership (what a difference four years makes) but only made three appearances.

Having spent a substantial amount of time on loan he's never really had the opportunity to shine. In the last two years he has been based at Darlington but fell out of favour when David Hodgson was replaced and became one of eleven shown the door by Dave Penney in the close season.

Alongside Nathan Joynes, it looks as though Stuart McCall is looking to find a young couple of strikers to complement the battle-hardened veterans of Barry Conlon and Peter Thorne. Like his mentor Neil Warnock, Stuart is clearly a fan of multiple attacking options!

Increasingly it looks therefore that Eddie Johnson is being thought of as a midfielder these days, a decision that will be welcomed in some quarters.

With the front line taking shape, and the midfield variously rumoured to be bolstered by Paul Evans, Chris Brandon, Kris Gate, Scott Phelan it would be good for the next names thrown about to be players who could play on the flanks.

I think the trialists mentioned are all capable of playing at this level. My only concern so far is the lack of a trialist goalkeeper, unless someone out there knows different.

someone posted on claret and banter that Saynor has been guaranteed second choice keeper. If that's true it's a bit strange he's not been given the number 13 shirt...Also, it has all gone quiet on Sam Russell the goalkeeper Stuart was rumoured to be looking at before but who went off to train with MK Dons...

Obviously i'm no real judge when it comes assessing if a player is good enough, but having watched Saynor's performances in some of the reserve games last season i don't personally from a supporters perspective think he's good enough.
Conlon The Barbarian
have never seen him so can't comment. I think one of those who'd been down and seen some training thought perhaps they'd seen someone quite tall...so it could be that there's been a striker trialling. Monday will be interesting.
